The Digital World: What Will They Come Up With Next?
Whats up readers? For those of you who are occasionally reading, or actually following my blog please know that it is much appreciated. The past few months of blogging have been quite interesting and invigorating and I am thrilled to share it with all of you.
As hard as it is to beleive our last week at the Ingenex headquarters took place last Wednesday. Derek is currently in Nepal vacationing with his family for the next three weeks. We have all wished him well on this amazing adventure and look forward to seeing all of his pictures upon his return.
Check out www.SocialHarbor.comand see the new layout and design of the website. Also, take a look at the packagess and benefits of this site. Incase you haven’t been following, Social Harboris a company that builds personal and professional online profiles for business professionals and their companies. A profesional profile is extremely useful in the busines world and is jut what you need to get your name and your companies name out there. Whether you are just emerging into the job market or you are the head of an extremely successful company, Social Harbor can benefit you in a countless amount of ways.
In further news, CEO of Yahoo, Jerry Yang, recently stepped down. Check out my post on the Eco-Friendly website to read more on this event. Also in recent new, Google ha launched a new speech recognition service for the iPhone which was just recently released. The service works just as if you were entering a question into the Google search box. You don’t even have to bother to be formal. When searching for the best Chinese restaurant simply say “best Chinese restaurant,” as opposed to “What is the best Chinese restaurant in Philadelphia.” Although the service still has some bugs to work out, it is still said to be better than any other speech recognition system out there.
Something else I also found interesting, was that American Well has now found a way where patient no longer have to wait to see a doctor for a long period of time. Instead, patient have the option to log onto their computers and be face-to-face with physicians over a Web cam. Consumers whose health plans use American Well will log onto their health plans’ Web sites to access the services. Patients will still be required to pay a co-pay just like at a doctor’s office. Doctors will hold ten minute appointments which have the option to be extended for a fee. Prescriptions are also able to be filed through the system. Although doctors get paid less than an office visit, they get more money for a phone consultation and do not have to worry about scheduling, overhead and paperwork. All they have to do is log on and wait for patients to come to them while American Well files all the claims and deposits the money directly into the doctor’s bank account. It’s as simple as that! For more information, check out www.AmericanWell.com.
As you can see there is a lot going on in the digital world. Who knows what they will come up with next? It is as exciting yet at the same time I am still somewhat skeptical about all of the new technology that has emerged recently. I guess we will just have to wait and see which ones check out and which ones don’t quite make the cut.

As always, here is your eco-friendly tip for the week:
Turn off your computer at night to save a ton of energy. Now for those of you, like me, who have a bad habit of leaving your computer on and idle at least put it on standby mode at the end of the day. Doing that, will save 95% of the electricity used compared to leaving it on and idle using up all that energy.
Eco-Friendly Internship Flies by as the Snow Falls
Hello again, hope all is well. Time is just flying by at what seems like the speed of light. Here we are already two weeks away from Thanksgiving and at our last day at the Ingenex Headquarters. Derek will be venturing to Nepal in the next couple of days so the rest of our work will be done via computer, with the exception of our Eco-friendly presentation at LA2M on December 10th. Feel free to come check it out at Pizza Pino in Ann Arbor.
In more recent news, Pedro, Jennifer and I have still been working on the adwords campaign for Social Harbor. We created different campaigns for each package and came up with numerous keywords to optimize each page.
Today, we worked on the landing pages for the benefits of the Social Harbor Website. Specifically I worked on the career page, adding new content to what I had already written and filing it down from there. The new designs for the Social Harbor site are looking fabulous. Also, Derek released the Social Harbor press release on Marketwire and PR.com, so look forward to seeing that.
So far this internship has given me a much better understanding and perspective of digital media. I am now able to confidently discuss and understand search engine optimization (SEO), social networking, social media, digital marketing and much more. I would definetly recommend this internship to anyone who is looking to go into a career in advertising and marketing. For all of you Michigan State students, next semester Derek will be teaching a digital media class. This class is definetly worth taking so stay tuned or contact me for more information.
As always, here is your eco-friendly tip for the week:
- Although this may be a challenge for most peopole, myself included, try to avoid using disposables (whether it be containes, paper plates, napkins, etc.). Try using durable and recycled products instead.

In the Midst of Change
Hello world. Today markes the dawning of a new American President. Although he has not been sworn in yet, Barack Obama is officially the new 2009 President of the United States of America. Whether you voted for Obama or not, it is still exciting to get involved in the election, watching the debates and of course, voting! This was the first election I have been able to vote in and I was extremely excited. A friend mentioned something to me last night that I think is an extremely interesting and crucial point. Think about how much our country has progressed throughout the years. 150 years ago, slavery was legal and now we have just elected a black president. It is amazing how things change through the years…and this change is DEFINETLY a good one. Personally, I look forward and hope that the changes in our future will be beneficial and influential, in a positive way that is.
Recently, as part of our internship, Pedro, Jennifer and I have started researching and creating keywords and ad campaigns for the Social Harbor website. We have had much success in coming up with some great keywords and are going to start attempting to publish some pay-per-click ads today. Katie and Nick have been working on a Press Release for social harbor and are going to start shooting a video today. Although it has been a crazy busy week, Pedro, Jennifer and I have been researching and discussing the best ways to come up with influential and highly viewed ads. Hopefully we will meet our expectations once all of the ads are published. So stay tuned and who knows, you could come across one of our ads sometime soon =). All of our personal ads are still up and running so it is possible you could come across one of them as well. Happy hunting.
And of course, as always, here is your eco-friendly tip for the week:
- Try not to run the dishwasher unless it’s absolutely full. Water conservation is crucial in this day and age so every little bit we can do to conserve it definetly helps.

Michigan State University: Going Green with the Spartans!
Hello all. Currently I am at the Ingenex headquarters brainstorming with a fabulous group of interns. We are working on widgets for our personal blog, in addition to discussing various topics pertaining to the launch of Social Harbor. We are all very excited that this new product has already been getting responses and the progression of its success is much anticipated.
Last week, Derek gave an outstanding presentation for the promotions commons on Digital Media. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that his presentation reached out to everyone. Personally, a few people whom I never thought would create a twitter account or a blog post recently surprised me by doing so. As you can see, word of mouth is much more powerful than most people realize.
In recent eco-friendly news, Michigan State University has been making headlines all over the news due to their new eco-friendly movement. Their Be Spartan Green campaign is MSU’s recent attempts to make an impact on campus and around the world by finding ways to be more environmentally friendly.
Michigan State has set up different teams to take a look at the campus community. They monitor the reduction of materials and waste, energy use reductions and greenhouse gases. The technical teams work on specific goals related to their focus areas which consist of the following: energy, materials, cost and returns, behavior, communications and transportation. The operations teams suggest modifications to imporve campus sustainability and determine what happens when changes are made. Operations teams are continuously formed as new projects come up due to research.
Michigan State has recently documented what I like to call, “the 5 R’s of Environmental Stewardship.” These consist of:
- Reduce- Use less energy and fewer materials to cut the amount of waste that is generated
- Reuse and Recycle- Recycle, of course. In addition, try to turn something old into something useful by reusing it. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
- Research and Reeducate- Take part in researching the world’s environmental challenges and problems. We have the power to educate and influence others into going green and preserving our environment
- Redesign- Michigan State is currently redesigning buildings to be more environmentally friendly in addition to meeting green LEadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for new construction. MSU has also started green roof projects, the Student Organic Farm and the pristine gardens and green spaces around campus.
- Rethink- Think of ways that you can be more environmentally friendly at home and at work. Brainstorm with friends and colleagues and share your ideas. Only you have the power to express your ideas and make a difference in the world.
For all of you creative geniuses out there, Michigan State University is offering a Be Spartan Green video contest. Participants must create a less than three minute video depicting what it is to Be Spartan Green. All participants will get a certificate of participation. The grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift card, the viewer’s choice winner will receive a $250 visa gift card and several smaller prizes will be awarded to recognize the top videos. All entries must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Friday, April 11th. This is a great way to have some fun, be creative and support being an environmental steward.
Hopefully Michigan State University’s Be Spartan Green campaign will influence not only students, but people in the surrounding areas as well. It is important that we continuously practice being environmental stewards no matter where we are or what we do. So get out there, have some fun, and practice one of the 5 R’s!
And of course…here is your eco-friendly tip for the week:
- Limit the use of disposable cups and plates. Not only are paper products becoming more expensive nowadays they are also terrible for the environment. Although no one likes washing dishes, most people are equipped with a dishwasher. For those of you that aren’t try to make that extra effort whether you live by yourself or with roomates to consciously wash your dishes as opposed to taking the easy way out.

Here is your eco-friendly tip for the week:
Change your light bulbs. Most of the energy comes from coal-fired plants. A compact fluorescent light bulb is more energy efficient and will save you money in the long run. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are energy smart and they’re more expensive, but they’ll last longer.
